Navaratri - A Celebration of Dance
All Purchases Generate Donations to Specific Charities!

The 9-day festival of dance starts on October 12th this year. The festival celebrates the victory of the Goddess Durga over the half buffalo demon Mahishasura. According to Indian legend, the demon Rambha falls in love with and joins with a water buffalo producing the half buffalo half demon son Mahishasura. Through intense prayer to Brahma, Mahishasura was granted a power that prohibited his defeat by man or god. He took full advantage of this gift and caused havoc on earth. The remorseful god Brahma along with his two other aspects, Visnu and Siva, created the only thing that could kill the troublesome demon, a perfect woman, created by combining three goddesses, Lakshmi, Pavati and Saraswati into the female goddess Durga. The sword and trident wielding Durga riding a golden lion defeats the demon in battle and restores order.

The victory of this deed is celebrated throughout the 9-days of Navaratri in Gujarat India by a dance celebration called a Garba where women dance around a flame symbolic of the victorious Durga. The nine days represent the nine different aspects of Durga, which include MahaSaraswati, MahaKali and MahaLakshmi. Each of these in turn manifest themselves into two additional aspects each for a total of nine. Aspects of a god are intended to represent different moods or personalities of that god. Being gods their different personalities take on a life of their own. The traditional dances also include a Ras or stick dance and can include men, unique in Indian culture. The dancing can last for hours with smaller groups frequently breaking off into smaller circles allowing for more expressive dancing or varying styles.

But that is not important. What is important is that Indonique is celebrating Navaratri this year (cause we want to come back in the next life in a higher tax bracket) by offering with each purchase during the 9 days of Navaratri:

One free bag of our Authentic Indian Masala Chai

Attend a Garba!
Indians love sharing their culture with others. Navaratri is a perfect opportunity to do just that. Contact an Indian association at most any University or an Indian acquaintance or friend about a Garba near you. We're sure they'll be happy to bring you along and maybe loan you a traditional Indian dress for the occassion. If you're a guy and still want to borrow the clothes, check out the Hijras story coming soon.
